The Webster’s dictionary defines destiny as a “predetermined course of events.” In 1987, I’m a recent college graduate and beginning to live my destiny. I wake up early on a cold day in April to report to the Naval Aviation Officer’s Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. I’ve spent years preparing mentally and physically for the program which is described as one of the most difficult programs in the US military.
When I arrive I am immediately immersed in learning how to march, stand, and eat like an AOCS Candidate. In the initial physical tests I am near the top of the class and I’m selected to become Class Leader. My preparation is beginning to pay off.
This is part 2 of my story and picks up as I arrive at AOCS and follows me on my first day of training as I "sweat" my way through the first 12 hours in the barracks. I am constantly being tested by my instructors and I am starting to make mistakes. As I ! copy the text into my "Poopy Gouge" I hear a loud noise moving down the hall towards my room. What is that noise? Is this another test? I flinch when the sound echoes off of the empty hall. It is getting closer. Should I hide? As the noise nears my door I'm forced to make a decision.
February 25, 2005 dawned cold and crisp. I'd lain awake for hours that morning, overcome with grief and loss. I'd been a widow for two months. Something compelled me to crawl from the warmth of my bed and find pen and paper. I will always cherish the closeness I felt to my husband that morning as I poured out my heart. It was as though he was there beside me as I wrote the words that became my lifeline and brought proof that love survives death.
In the mid-nineties, my wife was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, which had metastasized to her lymph nodes. The essay “Coping with Breast Cancer” details what happened in the wake of that diagnosis. We decided to release this composition in the hopes of helping other couples confronted with this terrible disease.

In the fall of 1994 we were living the good life. We’d just bought our dream house and moved in the previous July and were looking forward to our first holiday season in our new home. Only one thing placed a cloud over our lives at that point in time. My wife had a mysterious bloody discharge from one breast. She had also lost a considerable amount of weight and I was beginning to become concerned.
My wife was reluctant to agree to go to a doctor but finally I managed to elicit a promise from her that she would go to see a physician the day after T! hanksgiving. That morning we got into our car for the drive to the doctor, never suspecting that our lives were about to be forever changed.
I sat in the waiting room while my wife saw her gynecologist. I saw her come back out just a few minutes after she had been escorted back to the examination room. She was pale and said that the doctor had told her we had to go to the hospital at once for a mammogram and that the doctor was calling ahead to get her worked in that day.
She broke down and cried on the drive to the hospital and expressed her sense of dread saying, “The doctor says she’s afraid it might be breast cancer.”
That was the first time I heard the words breast cancer in relation to my wife. They were the scariest words I’d ever heard in my life.
